Custom Saxophone Mouthpieces by Ed Zentera
Refacing Services
Standard mouthpiece refacing includes the following:
  • Facing curve is customized and balanced.  If you happen to prefer an unbalanced facing, I can accomodate you.
  • Baffle tweaked for proper venting and desired tone.
  • Chamber tweaks for efficiency, if needed.
  • Modest tip opening changes, if desired.  Tip opening changes to stainless steel mouthpieces are very limited.
  • Mouthpiece table is flattened.  Concavity can be applied on request, though I don't personally recommend it.
  • Tip opening and my personal trademark engraved on request.

Mouthpieces which have their original facing and have not been significantly damaged can usually be refaced successfully.  Pieces which have been given a prior quality reface can sometimes be modified further, though there may not be enough material left to achieve the desired outcome.

If the target outcome can not be met for any reason, I will consult with the client to determine the appropriate plan of action.  If a project is prematurely terminated, a refund will be processed commensurate to the time invested.

Other mouthpiece services available:

  • More significant tip opening changes.  Tip opening potential is unique for each piece and has to be assessed individually.
  • Baffle modification - significantly building up or reducing the current baffle shape.
  • Tooth gouging and scratch repair.
  • Biteplate repair - gouges filled or entire biteplate replaced.
  • Beak shaping.
  • Improvement of ligature and handling scratches.
  • Chip and crack repair.  Large chips may not be able to be repaired.
  • General cleaning and polishing.  Remove/improve the appearance of aging and oxidation.
  • Shank bore reduction on metal mouthpieces - to provide a tighter fit on the neck.
  • Other experimental techniques are under development and will be added when available.
  • The services listed above are available for an additional fee.

NOTE:  Cosmetic work is intended to improve the appearance - not necessarily make the piece "like new" (though that may very well be the outcome!).  Severe damage may still be partially visible after repair.

Also available...
  • Mouthpiece assessments (measurements and playtesting only).  Acquire useful information to share with others if you plan on selling a particular mouthpiece.  This is a professional mouthpiece analysis - not a marketing analysis (I am not an appraiser).

Services I don't provide:

  • Shank crack repair & banding.  (I've done this before - I'm just not efficient at it so it's not on the menu)
  • Re-plating of metal mouthpieces.  (There are third-party sources who provide superb plating services)
  • Modification of original trademarks/facing markings - a.k.a. "forgery".  Some refacers will do this.  I won't.
  • I will also not work on pieces that have been deceptively altered.  While I can't necessarily spot all "fakes", if a piece looks like someone's trying to pull a fast one, I'll have no part of it.  If you come across a piece that I've worked on before and it's a forgery, then either I didn't catch the nuance or the alteration was made after I did the work.
  • Ridiculous tip opening changes.  Best to start with a piece close to the desired tip opening.  Moderate and significant tip opening changes are possible on some pieces, but if you want a Tonemaster 4 opened to a 10, it may not be possible.
  • Performing miracles.  Some pieces are essentially beyond repair.
